Project Overview:
EIV provided construction inspection, office engineering and quality
assurance for this emergency culvert replacement project located under the Southbound lanes of Interstate 89 just south of Exit 11 in Richmond, VT. Work began in May of 2022 when the culvert running under the interstate began to fail, precipitating the need for this unexpected replacement project. The section of the culvert running under the Northbound lanes will be replaced in 2023.
The existing culvert was an 8-foot diameter corrugated steel structure located approximately 60 feet below the interstate. In order to replace the culvert, large-scale excavation of 35-40,000 CY of material was required, resulting in an excavated area approximately 220 feet wide by 70+ feet deep. The existing structure was replaced with a 14’x10’ precast concrete box culvert.
In addition to inspection and office engineering responsibilities, EIV staff was responsible for performing Quality Assurance Manager functions to ensure that the contractor’s means and methods met project specifications and that an appropriate amount of acceptance testing and checks were completed in order to satisfy VTrans’ minimum requirements.
